  • A New Synthetic Opioid Causing Major Concern

Posted 7/8/2020 by Angelo M. Valente

The opioid epidemic continues to rage throughout the country in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Isotonitazene (ISO), a new synthetic opioid more powerful than fentanyl, may be contributing to the addiction crisis and causing increasing overdose deaths in the United States. According to a new report, ISO is causing approximately 40-50 overdose deaths a month in 2020, compared with about six per month last summer.

This weekend will usher in the Fourth of July.  We celebrate the birth of our nation and recognize the sacrifices our forefathers made to give us the freedom that makes our country so great.

  • Dual-Prescribing of Naloxone and Opioid Prescriptions Is Critical During the Pandemic

Posted 6/24/2020 by Angelo M. Valente

Last month, New Jersey Attorney General Grewal announced that New Jersey physicians, dentists and other healthcare practitioners who prescribe opioids for the management of chronic pain must also prescribe the opioid antidote naloxone to certain at-risk patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey (PDFNJ) recognizes and appreciates this important decision. Co-prescribing these prescriptions will give individuals and their families access to the life-saving antidote to reverse an opioid overdose.

  • Family Time is a Vital Way to Keep the Lines of Communication Open

Posted 6/17/2020 by Angelo M. Valente

Father’s Day is coming up this Sunday. For families, especially fathers, who are not able to be home as often, the COVID-19 pandemic may have presented an opportunity to spend additional time together. As a father of one college-aged daughter as well as two in high school, I have been grateful for the unexpected extra time spent with them. A recent Harvard study has found that 70 percent of fathers said they are feeling closer to their kids during the pandemic, and more than half said their children are opening up and sharing more about their feelings with them.

  • FED UP!

Posted 6/10/2020 by Angelo M. Valente

One year ago, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced a lawsuit against the Sackler Family, founders of Purdue Pharma, maker of OxyContin.  Through the litigation and the proposed settlements Purdue Pharma filed for bankruptcy in September.  Those who believe they or a family member has just cause to file a claim against Purdue Pharma can do so before July 30.

This week’s guest blogger, Emily Walden, Chair at FED UP!, provides important information on how a family can join the lawsuit against Purdue Pharma. She is urging anyone to file a claim if they believe they have just cause. See her blog below to find more information.
