PDFNJ Executive Director Inducted in Advertising Hall of Fame of New Jersey

Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey Executive Director Angelo Valente, far right, was inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame of New Jersey on November 8 at the Highlawn Pavilion in West Orange. As executive director since PDFNJ’s inception in 1992, Valente has spearheaded a number of unique substance use prevention public service campaigns that have been spread throughout the state and the nation.

The opioid epidemic keeps getting worse in New Jersey and experts predict overdose deaths could top 3,000 this year. The principal reason is a synthetic opioid called fentanyl, which is 50 to 100 times more powerful than heroin. Special Agent Tim McMahon of the Drug Enforcement Administration office in New Jersey said fentanyl is used to treat terminal cancer patients in extreme pain. It is often administered with a skin patch so that it is slowly absorbed into the skin.

Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (RNJMS) has launched a new Addiction Medicine Fellowship in an effort to fight the ongoing opioid epidemic. The fellowship is appointed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Upon completing the program, graduates will be eligible to sit for the boards in Addiction Medicine exam. Board-certified physicians are automatically granted the waiver to prescribe Buprenorphine, a medication used to treat opioid use disorder, according to a press release.

SPRING LAKE - A 26-year-old Spring Lake Heights native and recovering opioid addict is fighting addiction by walking over 2,500 miles from Maine to Key West, Florida. Three years ago, Jessica Grieb lost two close friends, a boyfriend and her older brother to the opioid epidemic. Jessica has been struggling with opioid addiction herself for nine years. She feels the walk is giving her purpose and to keep going while paying tribute to her lost loved ones.
